'Lady Vengeance' receives a 5-minute standing ovation in Venice
Park Chan-Wook's 'Sympathy for Lady Vengeance' received a loud standing ovation for 5 minutes after its official screening at the 62nd Venice Film Festival at 10:30 PM on September 3, local time.
The official screening, held along with the red carpet walk, was even more enthusiastically received than the press premiere of the previous day. Park and the leading actress Lee Young-Ae, each dressed in a suit and Hanbok, responded with a complacent smile.
Among the responses of the audiences were: "It's way more difficult to comprehend than Park's previous film, but it's good," "The actress' performance was touching and impressive. It's a journey toward catharsis through the contrast of colors and revenge," and "I really like it. I can't find anything to criticize about it."
'The night of Korean movies together with the kind Ms. Geum-Ja', held after the screening at the Westin Excelsior Hotel in the early morning of September 4, was also successful.
Over 200 foreign personnels in film industry attended, including Marco Mueller, the festival's director, and they were greeted by An Jeong-Sook, the head of the Korean Film Council, and Kim Dong-Ho, the director of the Pusan International Film Festival.
"Today is a truly memorable day, not just because 'Sympathy for Lady Vengeance' was screened, but more because I met director David Cronenberg in person," said Park in his greetings. "I met director Roman Polanski at last year's Cannes Film Festival, and he complimented my film like (Cronenberg did) today. It seems that meeting with masters brings me good luck. I hope the same will happen this time."
"To put it briefly, I made this film to win the hearts of women," he continued, expressing his gratitude for the 4 women, his wife and daughter who were next to him, Lee Mi-Gyeong, the vice president of CJ Entertainment, and Lee Young-Ae.
"There is nothing that can be accomplished by one person alone. A film is the product of the collaboration of the director and all the staffs. I'm grateful for the chance to be in such a film," said Lee Young-Ae. "I also hope that the Pusan Film Festival will be as successful as the Venice Festival."
Then they cut the 'kind Ms. Geum-Ja cake', which had appeared in the film. Alternatively called the 'tofu cake', it's a snow-white square cake worth 1 million won (=~US$1,000) that was specially made by the hotel from the picture provided CJ Entertainment.
